Vanilla Sky is my favorite movie and at the end you find out that David Ames (Tom Cruise) was actually cryo-preserved and that most of the movie was a lucid dream. The whole plot of this movie really got me wondering if you could actually be frozen to “death” and then be brought back at a later time. So can someone really die and be brought back? This odd question is the theory behind cryonics . And the answer to that question is yes…and no, yes there is a company that will cryo-preserve people, but no you can’t be brought back…yet! The people at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation have been cryo-preserving people with the intent to awaken them when the technology becomes available. Now who would pay (according to Alcor.org most health insurances will pay for the procedure) to be cryo-preserved when the technology isn’t even availible yet? The answer is probably more surprising than the concept. More than a hundred people have been cryo-preserved since 1967, which is the year the first case of cryonization occurred, and more than a thousand people have already made the legal and payment arrangements since then. Alcor Life Extension Foundation has been around since 1972 and as far as reputation: “The Alcor Life Extension Foundation is the world leader in cryonics, cryonics research, and cryonics technology.”.
